HOW TO CONQUER FEAR OF ENGLISH BY DOING SELF-AID STUDY

HOW TO CONQUER FEAR | UNIVERSITY OF DELHI | MyEnglishTeacher

Hello my dear English Learners,

We all know the experience of feeling like a child again, of not having the words to express ourselves, and the struggle to maintain our dignity in the face of self-criticism.

We often believe that the other person is judging us, that our mistakes and difficulties make us look stupid, and that our inability to communicate the way we hope to or expect somehow reflects our lack of self-worth.

There’s a voice in our head that says “don’t open your mouth, you’ll sound stupid,” and the sad part is that most of us tend to listen. Even worse, we project this voice upon other people, assuming that they are criticizing us.

But the truth is that you will never get fluent if you don’t open your mouth and use the language you are learning. It’s a hall of mirrors, a labyrinth of self-doubt, and the only way to move forward and become a confident and proficient English speaker is to develop the courage to move past your fears.

You’re not alone. This is what it feels like to learn another language.

And I’m not just talking about beginners. While beginners are more susceptible to this, and their problems are more daunting (intimidating), advanced and highly proficient speakers suffer from this problem all the time.

Here are 7 Tips to Conquer your fear of speaking English and communicate with dignity.

  1. Accept that Fear is Normal and You Need Courage to Face it

We walk around with the illusion that fluent speakers don’t feel fear, that one day we’ll learn enough and we won’t be scared. The truth is that advanced speakers, and even native speakers feel fear when communicating.

Fear is a fact of life, and those who have learned to conquer their fear are the ones who go far.

Qamran Rizvi

Mr. Qamran Rizvi sitting with his relaxed vibes

As the Mark Twain quote says, courage is the resistance of fear, not the absence of fear. The only thing that will reduce your fear is to face it, and in doing so you build courage and confidence, and you will realize that the monsters you’ve created are not real.

You may also realize that your biggest obstacle isn’t your English, but the fact that you are paralyzed by fear and have never learned how to face it.

Fear is a fact of life, not just for English, but for everything. For example, job interviews, tests, meetings, presentations, talking to a pretty girl, or guy. You must learn to face it.

“Life Begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

–Neale Donald Walsch

what can you do to leave your comfort zone and find the courage to open your mouth and speak English? Really, what’s the worst that can happen?

And what positive things could and will happen if you find the courage to open it again and again?

  1. Accept That Your Mistakes and Difficulties are an Important Part of Learning

Another illusion that English learners tend to have is that fluent speakers don’t make mistakes. The truth is that we all make mistakes, even native speakers.

Sure, English learners make more mistakes, and beginners make a lot more, but they’re a natural part of the process, and it’s the price you pay to develop fluency. You don’t succeed in anything in life if you aren’t prepared to make mistakes.

It may help to know that very very few non-native speakers speak “perfect” English. You may look at them and think they’re speaking perfectly, but the vast majority of people who learn English as a second language make little mistakes along the way.

Another important thing to understand is that native speakers don’t judge your fluency based on your mistakes. We judge your fluency based upon your ability to communicate and connect with us, which is the true function of the language.

This does not mean that you should ignore your grammatical mistakes, but rather accept them as a part of the process, and take advantage of the opportunity to learn from them.

  1. Make English a Fun, Convenient and Practical Daily Habit
Effective learners know that you have to apply what you learn to your life and create authentic experiences with the language. They also know that the best way to do this is to make it fun, practical, and above all, convenient.

Qamran Rizvi enjoying his natural attitude

The more you get accustomed to using English in your daily life, the easier it will be to find the courage to conquer your fear of speaking. The problem with traditional methods is that learners focus way too much on grammar, and ignore the experience of English.

What are these English For Life Strategies? We talk a lot more about them in 5 Ways to Make English a Fun Part of Your Daily Life, but a few of these are: watching TV & movies, listening to music you enjoy, listening to podcasts that teach English, and meeting people in person and online.

When you start having daily contact with English in your life (English For Life), several things will happen:

Your automatic reaction of fear when you don’t understand something will relax and you will feel calm even if you don’t understand everything.
Every other aspect of your learning process will get easier because you will gradually get used to the sounds and rhythms of the language.
You will become a lot more enthusiastic about your learning process because you will be doing things you enjoy in authentic learning situations.
Learning grammar will get a lot easier because it will be complemented by authentic learning experiences.

  1. Master Greetings and Goodbyes
One of the quickest ways to conquer your fear of speaking is to master greetings (hellos) and goodbyes. And I’m not just talking about “How are you?” and other simple ones.

We use them in nearly every face-to-face and even online interactions, and even if you’re only a beginner, learning them will help you feel in control and fluent for few a small moments at the beginning and end of every conversation.

You see, if you can connect with the person and make a fluent first impression, it’s much easier to start your conversation with courage and not get so paralyzed by your fear. And if you know how to say goodbye to a person in a relaxed and confident way, you will leave every conversation with a sense of dignity and confidence that will only build with time.

You may not be able to get fluent in the entire English language in a few days or weeks, but you sure can learn how to communicate confidently and fluently with your greetings and goodbyes.

With a great repertoire of greetings like, “What’s up?” “What’s going on?” “How have you been?” “What’s good?” you are able to connect with people in a natural and friendly way, which is great for your confidence.

And by mastering a small group of dynamic goodbyes like “take care,” “have a good one,” “it was nice to see you,” “have a nice day/week/trip,” and “later,” you end every conversation on a positive note.

This is one of the most dynamic and fun parts of the language, it immediately gives you the tools connect with almost anybody, and with just a handful of phrases, you can start and end every conversation with dignity, confidence, and even fluency.

  1. Find People Who Support Your Learning
If your English learning support network is composed of people who are critical and unsupportive of you, it’s going to be difficult to overcome your fears because they are reinforcing them.

As an English learner, you need to find people who encourage, support, and celebrate you in your learning and your mistakes. I’ve met too many people who have a distorted perception of their English ability because they are around people who criticize them and don’t give them the support they need.

If the other person is more advanced than you, it’s often the case that their criticism and resistance comes from their own lack of self-esteem with their English. They criticize others because they don’t feel secure with their own English, and they feel validated if they verify that you speak worse.

This also happens a lot with people who believe that fluency is merely a question of correct grammar and will incessantly criticize your mistakes while ignoring the more essential question of communication.

So what kind of people do you need in your life to support your English?

You need people and communities who encourage you to speak, to use your English, and to make lots of mistakes. They will help you understand that your mistakes, difficulties, and frustrations are completely natural, and that the only way to conquer them is to keep moving forward and build courage, to work hard and devote yourself to your process, and to make English a passion and something you do every day.

You can find people and communities online (Check out Ethan’s Speaking English Online article), and you can even meet people in person. Couchsurfing is a good place to start to meet people in your city.

  1. Improve Your Concentration and Emotional Balance with Activities Like Meditation
The final piece of advice that will help you conquer your fears and speak English with courage is to work on your concentration and emotional life with meditation.

You see, meditation will improve every aspect of your life and help you develop confidence, courage, and mental equanimity in whatever you decide to do, and you will see quick results with your English.

“If your mind is a muscle, then meditation is a way to take it to the gym. The stronger your control of your mind becomes, the more you’re able to consciously control what your mind focuses on and how it processes new information. Strengthening your mind in this way has repercussions on every aspect of your life: your emotional health and self esteem, your work performance, your discipline, your relationships, your ability to communicate well, your overall happiness, your stress levels, and your physical health as well.”

American ACCENTS

Hello dear learners, I already wrote an answer for this which I, again, write it here in the same manner.

The very question is how to speak in American accent:-

Any language accent can be learnt by practice. Well you asked, “how can I speak English in American accent?”, I suggest you to go in depth phonetics of American English. Once you learnt the accent, and practise in it, then , I am pretty sure that you would speak like an American.

For example:

Consider the following words and take their pronunciation into account in comparison with the British and American accents.

  1. Ladder

American accent: ‘r’ is always pronounced — Ladder

British accent: ‘r’ is not pronounced when it is followed by a vowel sound — Ladde(r)

In British English ‘r’ is pronounced only before a vowel sound. As in ‘red’.

  1. Writer

American accent : when ‘t’ comes between vowel sounds , it is pronounced as ‘d’—- writer is pronounced as ‘rider’.

British accent : ‘t’ in such case remains the same — ‘writer’

  1. Get

American English : past participle of get is ‘gotten’.

British English: past participle of get is ‘got’.

In American English, some prepositions are used differently as:

Stay at home —- British English

Stay home——— American English.

In American English (informal) , the adverb ending in ‘ly’ is often not used.

He looked at me really strangely —– British English

He looked at me really strange——– American English

‘Shall’ is not used instead of ‘will’ in American English for the first person singular number, future tense.

I shall(will) be there . ——- British English

I will be there. —————— American English

Should ( not shall ) I be here. ——– American English

Irregular verbs

Past simple and past participle of verbs ending with ‘t’ is replaced by ‘ed’:

They burnt (burned) the house. —— British English

They burned the house. —————– American English.

A spoilt child.——————————— British English

A spoiled child. —————————– American English

Conjunction like ‘and’ is not often used.

Go and take a look. ——————– British English

Go take a look. ————————– American English

Well, watch movies and observe the way the Americans speak and learn it. In a month or two on practising, you would start speaking American accent.

For further study in phonetics, study An Outline Of English Phonetics by Daniel Jones.

I hope the above would help you and a little practice would make you speak like Americans.

1. Accept That English Is a Weird Language

Sometimes you can find patterns in English grammar, but other times English doesn’t make sense at all. For example, why are read (reed) and read (red) the same word, but pronounced differently depending on whether you’re speaking in the past or present tense? Or why is “mice” the plural of “mouse”, but “houses” is the plural of “house”?

Unfortunately, there are just as many exceptions as there are rules in English. It’s easy to get stuck on learning how to speak English properly, if you try to find a reason for everything. Sometimes English is weird and unexplainable, so instead the best thing to do is just memorize the strange exceptions and move on.

2. Dive into the Deep End

Studying English for an hour once a week isn’t usually enough to make any real progress. The best way to quickly improve your English is to spend at least a few minutes practicing every day. Immerse yourself as much as possible every time you study, and challenge yourself to listen to, read, and even say things in English that you think might be too difficult for you. If you want to speak English fluently, you need to make it an essential part of your everyday life.

3. Stop Being a Student

The right attitude can make the difference between failure and success. Stop thinking of yourself as someone who is learning English, and start thinking of yourself as someone who speaks English. It’s a small change, but it will make you feel more confident and help you to use the English you already know more effectively.

This also means you need to start thinking in English. If you want to say the word “apple” in English, for example, right now you probably think of the word in your native language first, and then try to think of the correct word in English. Instead, try imagining a picture of an apple, and then just think the English word “apple”. Real fluency happens when you stop mentally translating conversations.

4. Get More out of Listening

When most students listen to a native English-speaker, they focus on understanding what all the words mean. This is definitely important, but there is a lot more you can learn from listening. Try listening not just to what the words mean, but to how the person says them. Notice which words the person links together in a sentence, or when they say “ya” instead of “you.” Try to remember these details the next time you speak and your English will begin to sound more natural.

Easier said than done, right? When you listen to native English speakers, it can be hard to understand every single word that is spoken. They might use many words you don’t know, talk too fast or have a strong accent.

5. Learn and Study Phrases

Speaking English fluently means being able to express your thoughts, feelings and ideas. Your goal is to speak English in full sentences, so why not learn it in full sentences? You’ll find that English is more useful in your everyday life if you study whole phrases, rather than just vocabulary and verbs. Start by thinking about phrases that you use frequently in your native language, and then learn how to say them in English.

6. Don’t Study Grammar Too Much

The key to learning a language is finding a balance between studying and practicing. Speaking English fluently isn’t the same as knowing perfect English grammar – even native English-speakers make grammar mistakes! Fluency is about being able to communicate. That’s why sometimes it’s important to put the grammar textbook away, so you can go out and practice those writing, reading, listening and speaking skills in the real world.

It’s natural that your native language and the way you learned English has influenced your English pronunciation. Why? Well, you, most likely, learned English from non-native English speakers and if they spoke English with an accent then that was your role model. Another contributing factor is that when you learned English you made associations between how to pronounce a word based on its spelling. This can result in mispronunciations because English is not a phonetically based language.

I agree with many of the other participants who have responded to your question. Imitation is the key to acquiring a different accent. There’s no magic wand here. Our speech is governed by habits and the only way to change that habit is to practice a different one. It can help, however, to have an expert provide some guidance on which sounds you need to practice.

Why practice all of the sounds of English if you don’t need to? That’s a waste of your time and resources. If you’re proficient in English and have been speaking it for a while you’d probably be surprised how many sounds you do say correctly or are emerging as habitual.

Research has shown that people who speak English as a second language tend to exhibit error “patterns” that are common among others who share their native language. For example, native Spanish speakers tend to insert a vowel (epenthesis) prior to s-blends (as in the words “school” and “speak”). They also, along with most non-native English speakers, tend to produce final voiced consonants as unvoiced or voiceless consonants. This might result in the word “dog” sounding like “dock” or “bag” sounding like “back”. You might not easily identify this error pattern if your primary practice approach relies only on the imitation of reality show actors (their speech – not their behavior…:).

So. What’s the best way to modify your accent? Well, naturally, I’m going to recommend you, first, consider hiring the services of a Certified Accent Reduction consultant (Best American Accent Training) who will thoroughly evaluate your speech producing a Personal Phonetic Analysis. Then create a custom program to address only those target sounds you need to work on in order to streamline your practice.

Another option is to go the self-study route but choose one that is based on your native language (remember my earlier comment about not wasting your time working on sounds that don’t represent error patterns in your native language?) and provides you with life-time online access (Accent Reduction Training Programs For Professionals).

Assimilation, Intrusion and Elisionare features of connected speech and when it comes to speaking English like a North American they are necessary to learn. These features will help your English to flow smoothly and sound natural.

Assimilation is when the sound at the end of a word changes to make it easier to link it to the next word.

Example:

“Don’t you just love the food here?” sounds like “Doncha just love the food here?”

Intrusion is when a new sound “intrudes” in between two existing sounds. The ounds that are more likely to do this are /j/ /w/ and /r/.

Example:

“He asked me to do it” sounds like “Heyasked me to do it”

Elision is where a sound is taken away in the middle of two existing sounds. Usually this is with a /t/ or a /d/ sound.

Example:

“She lives Next door” sounds like “She lives Nexdoor”

THE NORTH AMERICAN R – “ERRRR”
Mastering the letter R in North American spoken English is very important. Lots of learners can feel frustrated because the R doesn’t sound like anything in their native language. To add to the confusion, the R can be said differently throughout the USA, depending on where you live. This tip is the most common way to use the R with a North American English accent.

First it is important to be aware of R colored vowels.

Example:

Word sounds like Werrd, rather than pronounced with an O sound

World sounds like Werrld, rather than pronounced with an OR sound

Second remember that an R at the end of a word will usually be pronouncd strongly in North American English. Just as Gabby said “get out your Pirate hooks”, be prepared as the North American R really does sound like a Pirates “ERrrr”.

Example:

“I parked my car over there” will sound like “I parked my caERR over thERR”

USE AMERICAN PHRASES
This is an easy way to sound like a North American English speaker. In real day-to-day conversation you will speak differently with close friends or family, then when speaking to a Boss or Police Officer. When speaking with friends our language is more casual, playful and relaxed. Add a couple of North American phrases to your speech to help you sound more like a native English speaker.

Example:

Instead of “How are you today John?”, try “What’s up John?”

Instead of “John, your sweater is very nice”, try “John that sweater is awesome”

Instead of “John, you look good tonight”, try “John, you are looking sharp my friend”

SPEAK LOUDER
North American English speakers are known for speaking louder. It is a language with a lot of action (more about verbs in the next tip) and has the volume to match the movement. It is a language that sounds confident and bold, and so speaking this way will take time and practice. When practicing, it may help to pretend to be an Actor and imagine feeling confident and bold, and then try speaking louder. There is an expression in America “fake it until you make it”. Pretending confidence when practicing will eventually lead to feeling more confident in everyday conversations. Confidence is critical to speaking a little louder and thereby sound more North American.

USE LOTS OF VERBS
While speaking use lots of phrasal verbs to sound less textbook-like and more like a native English speaker. North American English speakers use a lot of phrasal verbs in their conversations and therefore you will want to use them to.

Example:

Instead of “where do I exit?”, try “where do I get out of here?”

Instead of “When did you arrive?”, try “When did you show up?”

Instead of “I don’t like it when you get angry”, try “I don’t like it when you blow up”

START TURNING NOUNS INTO VERBS
Another quick and easy way to sound more North American is to use the simple trick of turning a Verb into a Noun (also called nominalization) when forming a sentence.

Example:

Did you use google to search something new on the Internet?

Just say “I googled that book you told me about”

Do you want to tell someone you want to add them on Facebook?

Tell them “I will friend you on Facebook”, or “Friend me on Facebook”

AMERICAN ACCENT

Feeling confused or want more information on this topic?

HOW CAN I GET MORE FLUENT IN ENGLISH

Originally Answered:
What is the fastest way to learn English.

I have been training English language for over 10 years now and through experience I can tell you a few way to learn English organically and the typical roadblocks you will face and how to overcome them. This is based on my experiences with folks from India.

  1. Understand and be aware of the fact that you think in your native language and try to speak in English. Both languages have different rules they play by. Just like, cricket and hockey are both sports, but you can’t play cricket using the rules of hockey.
  2. The biggest roadblock you will face is your peers/ friends/ colleagues. Usually we tend to gravitate towards people of our own regional background. This reduces the opportunity for you to practice and better your English. When you start speaking in English, most likely people will not follow suit and respond in English or there will be some banal joke about how you are trying to be elitist etc. In your own way prepare for this situation and learn to deal with it. Make a group of friends who you don’t share common languages with and start talking in English.
  3. Speaking a language is like any other motor skills, like swimming or driving a car. I can give you a book about swimming and then you can get full marks on a written test on swimming, but if I throw you in the deep end of the pool, chances are you will probably drown. Same with learning English. you can watch all the movies you want, listen to all the songs you want and read all the books you want. These are passive methods of learning. It will not assure you of speaking the language fluently and confidently. Instead, watch a movie and discuss it with someone, read a book and recommend it to a friend verbally, listen to a song and sing along. Trust me one of the best ways to learn any language is to sing in it.
  4. Enjoy making mistakes. Most of us feel shy and demotivated when we make a mistake in speaking in English and then give up altogether. I always encourage my participants to make as many mistakes as they can. If you make 1 mistake you will learn 1 new thing, if you make 10, you will learn 10 new things. Making mistakes will also help you overcome your fear of failure, which is a greater driving force here than a desire for success. Learn to laugh at yourself when you make a mistake. “He who laughs at himself will never cease to be amused.”
  5. Join a club, any club, Toastmasters preferably. Meet new people and speak to them in English. The club will give you common premise to talk about.
  6. Talk to yourself in English. Most of us have a voice giving running commentary inside our heads. Make that voice speak in English for as much as you can. You will notice that in a few days you will begin to think in English. This will increase your speed and fluency while speaking.

I have been teaching English for the last 10 years and have another 5 years to go. I have taught children of all age groups, from the primary level, intermediate level and the senior secondary level. I speak from experience of all those years. But I have to issue a disclaimer. My observations may not be the final word on the issue. Learning a language, requires the learner to devote a major part of his time to being EXPOSED to the language. This means you have to read books in English. I would suggest you purchase a number of books by the writer of children books. That would be Enid Blyton. The books are available online from Amazon and others. I know you will feel that I am belittling you by asking you to begin with children’s books. But you need to start there. The advantages are many. You won’t find the vocabulary difficult. You won’t have to refer to a dictionary as often as you would have to for books that you feel suits your chronological age. Be humble and accept that you want to learn right from the beginning. Besides, her stories are based on the English (British) way of life. Let anyone say what they want but English is the Queen’s English. The rest (American, Australian, and others) take off from Queens English. It will also give you a a deep insight into the influences that shaped the language. The land, food, the history, the impact of other cultures on English, the architecture, dresses, in short, everything English, will get hardwired into your subconscious mind. You will learn to think in English. Unless you begin to think in English, you will never acquire the proficiency that you so desire. Also find some children (your own, if you have any) and narrate the stories you have read in YOUR own words. If you find yourself unable to use your own language, borrow words from the story. This will strengthen your sense of sentence structure and the pattern of the style of English. The children would appreciate your act of narrating stories to them and most importantly they will not be judgemental about your capabilities. You should be able to read about 50 books in the first year. Progress from the early set of books to the books Enid Blyton has written for teenagers. You can now, after a year, include books by R. K. Narayan, Ruskin Bond, Rudyyard Kipling. You can also read Sudha Murphy and other Indian writers in English. Avoid masala fiction by writers who pretend to write in English. You will your thinking. This should take you about six months. Now you should be ready for serious reading. All through out this period keep narrating stories to children. By now you should have been able to muster up the courage to speak with people similarly placed as you. Start reading the Classics of English literature. For a list google for them. Wordsworth editions, a foreign publisher, can be found in upmarket book stores. In Mumbai, you can try Granth in Juhu, or Ashish Book Store in CST. By the reading you have done, you would have imbibed most of the idioms and phrases that you would have tried to learn formally. English employs many literary devices and poetic devices. You will begin to understand the nuances of the language. A lot still needs to be done but it would be premature to enumerate them in this humble attempt. Wish you the best. God bless.

First of all we should know what is English fluency? What does it mean to speak English easily and automatically?

My definition is simple– when you speak English automatically when your speech is effortless. You speak fluent English when the words come out of your mouth– without translation and without hesitation.

Sometimes this is called “thinking in English”, but truly automatic speech is even faster than that– there is no thinking. You donʼt think about the language at all- you just speak as easily and effortlessly as you do with your native language.

Why is automatic fluent speech important?

Itʼs important because automatic English speaking is the key to getting results with English. Automatic speaking makes it easy to connect with native speakers.

As an automatic English speaker, itʼs easy for you to make friends, participate in business meetings, talk to customers, understand movies, and get better jobs.

Steps to learn good English.

1. My first suggestion is to read as much as possible in English ALOUD.

A standard daily English Newspaper and the Readers Digest have very good reading material. If possible record your voice and listen to it to know the areas the sounds, words and alphabets that give you trouble and on which you need to work.

2. Don’t translate

When you want to create an English sentence, do not translate the words from your Mother tongue. The order of words is probably completely different and you will be both slow and incorrect by doing this. Instead, learn phrases and sentences so you don’t have to think about the words you are saying. It should be automatic.

The mother tongue influence is a problem for many considering that very few of us are native English speakers.

Most often, when you want to create an English sentence, do not translate the words from your Mother tongue.

To reduce that make more English speaking friends and make a determined effort to speak only in English, even if you keep forgetting words, or tend to stammer or your friends tend to laugh at you. This will require a lot of will power but soon you will improve on it.

If someone corrects your pronunciation don’t take offence, instead be grateful that he/ she is helping you correct yourself.

3. Learn and study phrases

I would also suggest you try to learn at least 3 -5 new words a day and look up the meaning in a dictionary, then then try and use these words in your daily work and in your communication to improve your vocabulary. Find synonyms for words that give you trouble and use the synonym.

If you know 1000 words, you might not be able to say one correct sentence. But if you know 1 phrase, you can make hundreds of correct sentences. If you know 100 phrases, you will be surprised at how many correct sentences you will be able to say. Finally, when you know only a 1000 phrases, you will be almost a fluent English speaker.

4. If you still feel that professional help is needed then you will have to attend English speaking classes.

Doʼs and Donʼts

Donʼt:

  1. 1. Don’t study grammar too much

This rule might sound strange to many ESL students, but it is one of the most important rules. If you want to pass examinations, then study grammar. However, if you want to become fluent in English, then you should try to learn English without studying the grammar.

  1. Sit still when listening to English.
  2. Study textbooks, grammar books, or vocabulary books.

Stand or Sit with bad posture while learning.

4. Keep negative beliefs about English or yourself.

5. workbook exercises.

Do:

1. Move your body while listening to English.

2. Use gestures and movements to remember difficult words/phrases.

3. Learn with your ears.

4. Develop and practice positive beliefs about English and yourself.

5. Smile every time you listen to English

Please try to adopt above steps. So, that you could fasten your language fluency.

HOW TO MASTER ENGLISH FASTER

Many of my friends have approached me and asked about this. I personally feel that I have a considerable amount of knowledge in this language so I thought I can write it down. Thought am a leaner too!

English is by-far the most commonly used and spoken language everywhere.

And in the country like India, though a lot of people understand and speak well, still a huge percentage of population lacks at it completely. Even though in almost every school, it is given the top most priority of as a “1st Language”, but still many students don’t really know the basic Grammar and it makes me sick, ugh!

By English, we not only mean speaking (as it sounds standard, etc.) but writing it, pronunciation every word correctly is also a task to perform.

English is a fun language to learn (here are 7 reasons why it rocks) and even though it’s considered an accessible & relatively easy one to learn with more than 700,000 words and spellings, that can throw off even the most skilled learner, learning English fast can seem impossible. No one wants to learn it slowly too!

But am here to tell you that it isn’t as long as you have the right strategy!

So here are 7 tips for it –

1. Read everything you can get your hands on :

Now here I’d first like to say that start reading good quality books as others say too, because trust me that’s vv important and if you want suggestions regarding that feel free to DM me on Instagram! Classic literature, paperbacks, newspapers, websites, emails, your social media feed, cereal boxes, ingredients list : if it’s in English, read it. Why? Well, this content will be full of juicy new vocabulary as well as fair amount to start with you already know. This helps you improve quickly, as re-exposure to learned vocabulary gives you new examples in context, therefore reinforcing those words in your mind. On the other hand, learning new words and expressions is essential to building your vocabulary arsenal, particularly in a language like English with so many words and grammar.

2. Talk with real live humans :

What is a language for if not to communicate?

Sure, we humans have become experts at communicating without opening our mouths -thanks to Whatsapp! but when push comes to shove, it’s true that speaking a language helps it stick in your head far better than only reading or writing it. Just think of how many times you’ve heard people say that they “understand, but can’t speak English.” A lot of would-be English speakers have turned talking into a huge insurmountable barrier that only serves to psyche them out. Don’t be like that. Seek out native speakers for an informal language exchange, enroll in a course, or take classes online.

3. Subscribe to Podcasts or YouTube channels (if only in English) :

Like humor? Politics? Blogging? Cooking? With topics covering every interest imaginable, there’s an English-speaking podcast or Youtube channel out there for you. Subscribe to a few and listen while driving or watch during the commute to school or work. At first, you might find the native accents difficult, but stick with it and you’ll soon start to understand what you hear (as well as learning lots of new vocab from a native speaker!)

4. Use your friends :

Have you ever come across any of your friends who is really good at English or fluent in speaking? Did you ever feel embarrassing that you didn’t make any sense while uttering words in any play or in front of a group of people? Don’t worry, still it’s never too late. You will feel a bit sad about it that day and that self-realisation to learn or improve will make you bold enough to do it! Have friends who post online in English? Don’t gloss over them in your newsfeed: scan the items they share and commit to exploring one or two each day. They might be news or magazine articles, videos, talks, blog posts, songs, or anything else: if it’s in English and the topic interests you, it’s going to be helpful! Talk to them on a small topic on a daily basis. Make sure they’re not judgemental and are ready for it! It’s not gonna take too much of the time! This will be the best! Can’t find topics to talk on? DM me

5. Ask a lot of questions :

Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it also propelled the language learner to fluency! As you learn English, you’ll soon collect a mountain of questions. Don’t sit on your doubts – be curious and resolve them! If you’re enrolled in a course, ask your teacher (it’s what they’re there for, after all). But if you’re learning alone, don’t worry: find answers in blogs or language websites, ask other learners, or read through forums. You’ll be happy you did! Don’t be dumb and keep on delaying them, because those doubts are only gonna make you perfect! Again, here seek for answers and if u can’t, again DM me

6. Don’t kick yourself while you’re down :

When you start to feel like you’re not making ground – which happens to all learners at some point – don’t say, “I don’t speak English,” or “I’ll never get this.” In fact, ban those phrases from your vocabulary! They only blur your understanding of the progress you’re making and convince you that your dreams of speaking English well are impossible. Instead, say “I’m learning English and making improvements everyday,” “It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it,” “I’m so much better that I was six months ago,” and other phrases to remind yourself of the big picture.

7. Start with what you really need :

Your English studies are likely to go far more quickly if you constantly remind yourself of your motives for learning. I mean it’s a never ending process of learning! So you have lot of other options to learn it from – listen to some nice quality English songs while looking to at their lyrics on Shazam or something cause by that you’ll not only come over the new words but also with pronunciation of the words too, you can watch the interviews of actors and actresses to understand how the conversation is being made on a particular question or a topic, and if you’re a rich brat who is going to travel or frequently travels abroad, you have the right chance to meet new people and talk to them! If there’s a better way to learn English than being immersed in it while living and studying in an English-speaking country, I’d love to know!

Well now that’s the end of these points!I hope you understood them well and are awaiting to take them down and go for it!If you are well-versed with the language also you can never be perfect at it.Still find difficulty, hit me up on my email or Instagram DM.See you super soon in next blog.

Hope you liked it!

HOW MANY DAYS A MAN CAN SURVIVE WITHOUT FOOD OR WATER

Rita Chretien, a Canadian woman survived being stranded inside a vehicle in Nevada for 48 days, by eating only some trail mix and candy, and drinking water from a stream. Apparently, she and her husband were following their GPS instructions on their way to Las Vegas from British Columbia when they took a rural road that essentially turns to a bog in the winter months. Their van eventually got stuck in the mud in the middle of nowhere, and they both waited for help for 3 days without sighting anyone. At this point, Albert Chretien, the husband, left to seek out help, while Rita remained inside the van. When she was found by a group of hunters just last week, she was nearly dead and had lost some 30lbs. Her husband remains to be found.

This recent story of near complete starvation highlights the human ability to survive for long periods of time without sustenance.

Due to obvious ethical concerns, there is not a whole lot of credible scientific data on the topic of starvation and survival. Instead, there are many accounts of either voluntary or involuntary cases of complete or near-complete starvation that allow us to make some very general conclusions.

One of the most well known cases of voluntary starvation, is the hunger strike of Mahatma Ganhdi. During his protest, Gandhi ate absolutely no food and only took sips of water for 21 days, and survived. What extraordinary about this case is the fact that Gandhi was very lean when he started his hunger-strike, thus not having much energy reserve from the outset. Also, it must be noted that during his life, Gandhi is reported to have performed a total of 14 hunger strikes.

In a 1997 editorial in the British Medical Journal, Peel briefly reviewed the available literature regarding human starvation. Generally, it appears as though humans can survive without any food for 30-40 days, as long as they are properly hydrated. Severe symptoms of starvation begin around 35-40 days, and as highlighted by the hunger strikers of the Maze Prison in Belfast in the 1980s, death can occur at around 45 to 61 days.

The most common cause of death in these extreme cases of starvation is myocardial infarction or organ failure, and is suggested to occur most often when a person’s body mass index (BMI) reaches approximately 12.5 kg/m2.

Of course, one would expect marked variability between 2 individuals in their ability to endure starvation. As suggested in a Scientific American article by Alan Lieberson,

The duration of survival without food is greatly influenced by factors such as body weight, genetic variation, other health considerations and, most importantly, the presence or absence of dehydration.

I would add that body composition would also likely play a key role; for the same body weight, the individual with a greater percentage of body fat has a greater on-board storage of calories. Also, a lower muscle mass would generally be associated with reduced caloric consumption. This by extension would suggest that females may have a survival advantage over males due to their greater relative fat stores.

Most important factor of all, however, appears to be hydration.

In the example that started this post, Rita Chretien survived her 48 day ordeal in large part due to the availability to some melted snow for drinking. Indeed, had no water been available, Rita may not have fared as well. In examples of hospitalized individuals who are in a persistent vegetative state, who become cut off from artificial sustenance, death ensues within 10-14 days. Keep in mind that these individuals are in a coma and completely immobile, thereby consuming the lowest amount of energy possible. It can thus be surmised that the same conditions (no food or water) in a person who is at least somewhat active, and who may perspire, would only lead to a much swifter end.

For individuals who like to get out into the wilderness, and who upon reading accounts of other’s misadventures (Into the Wild, 127 Hours, etc.) are not in the least discouraged from following suit (present company included), ensuring to always have a reasonable supply of water should be priority number one. Additionally, as is well documented in the eventual demise of Christopher McCandless (Into the Wild) the avoidance of eating unknown plants and shrubs can also be a key survival strategy.

Speaking Fluency Activity: 3 Steps to Having Better Speaking Flow

Being a fluent speaker is every language learner’s dream. Fluency is defined in different ways depending on who you ask, it definitely has a connection to the word ‘flow’. For me, I believe speaking fluency is the ability to link you thoughts together using connective words and phrases the way native speakers do. This allows you time to think about grammar rules or words while you are still ‘speaking’. Fluency is about being able to connect spontaneous thoughts together in a way that ‘flows’ and it’s not as difficult as it sounds to achieve that.

Believe me, this activity will help you to speak better and you can complete it within the next 30 minutes. I’m going to show you how you can achieve better speaking fluency today or at least a better speaking flow than you have ever felt before.

This speaking exercise is very effective in helping you to develop your speaking skills. It’s a perfect exercise if you do not have much time or if you need to improve quickly.

Often the activities to help you improve quickly can feel hard in the beginning and it takes a certain amount of discipline to choose to do these types of challenging activities. It’s normal that most students prefer to do things that are easy and comfortable… but those students don’t want to improve their English as bad as you do, right?

You want to be better at speaking English?
But you hate doing speaking exercises….

The fact is that most students would rather read, write, study grammar, review vocabulary…. Or do anything else they can think of to avoid speaking. Speaking is hard, it is uncomfortable at the beginning and it doesn’t get any easier until you start speaking more often.

The good news is that this technique I am going to share with you can be practiced in the privacy of your own home. You can practice giving your opinion, doing a summary or telling a story with no one around to hear your horrible speaking efforts.

I’m sure your speaking isn’t as horrible as you think it is BUT it can be really uncomfortable talking with someone you don’t know and having a difficult time expressing your thoughts when you are not used to speaking.

Step 1: Start trying to explain what the topic is about. Tell the story as if it is something interesting that you are explaining to someone in a conversation.

Step 2: Write down the words or phrases that you do not know as you are trying to speak. Look up these new words you recognize that you need to know in order to tell the story.

Step 3: Repeat step 1 and 2 until you feel confident with your ability to express your idea clearly and with a good speaking flow.

Be sure to read the next section where I explain what ‘conversational connectors’ are and how they are essential to speaking fluency.

Let me tell you a story about how I know this technique works…

This story will explain to you how I use this technique. You will also see the quality of the techniques we share on the website. I only share the best and most effective exercises that really helped me to overcome problems with my speaking and listening skills.

One day I decided that I was going to tell my language partner that I was practicing with regularly, about the book I was reading in Spanish. I wanted to be able to explain what the book was about based on what I had read.

So, as I was driving around in my car, I decided to try to explain it to myself using the words I knew. Let me tell you, the first version was a disaster. I had NO speaking flow, I was lacking basic verbs and I didn’t know how to connect the sentences well. I did not feel very good about being able to explain the story line of the book to my language partner in just a few hours…

I wrote down the words I needed to learn and realized I also need to know the ‘conversational connector words’. Examples of simple conversational connectors are: so, then, and, now, but, you know, anyways, after, later, etc. However; when these words are used, they sound extended. The word ‘so’ sounds like ‘soooooooooo’. Or ‘and’ is said like aaaaaaannnnnnnd.

If you listen to a conversation, you will hear how often these words are used and how they ‘buy time’ for the speaker to organize their thoughts. Conversational English is different from written English in the way it is communicated. These words make you sound like you are telling a story to a real person, rather than reading something that is written.

Now that I knew the words I needed and they were fresh in my mind, I tried to explain the story again. It was easier this time but I changed how I was explaining it a bit. This changed the verb tenses I was using, gave me new ‘grammar structures’ to think about and of course, new words. What was happening was I was describing things in greater detail. I looked up any new words and phrases I discovered that I didn’t know.

On the third attempt, I felt like a champion! The words seemed like they were flowing out of my mouth, the grammar was already organized in my head and I was able to remember the new vocabulary.

The next day, I tried the summary again. To my surprise, I was able to remember the new words even though I had not studied them AND I was able to explain the story in even more detail with the best speaking flow I have ever experienced.

Try this Activity… Right Now!

Okay, so now you have a choice. You can either close this article and only think about doing this activity. Or you can try to do it.

Once you do this activity, you will see the way you are using English and how it feels different in your mind than other activities. Below are a few ideas that you can use to practice this exercise right now without needing to leave this page.

What is the technique discussed in this article and how do you do it?Why did you decide to learn English? When you are able to speak English fluently, how will it change your life? What was the last television show you watched about? What is the plot of your favorite movie? How do you cook your favorite recipe? What makes you love your favorite sport?Tell me what your favorite song is about, what the idea is behind the lyrics.Describe in as much detail as you can in a story, what you do for work or what your responsibilities are as a student. What is your favorite season of the year and how that affects the type of activities you do?

As you can see, you can talk about anything using this technique. Your speaking is going to improve REALLY FAST, if you do activities that put all the English skills you have into action. Start using the words that are in your study lists, the grammar you have spent so much time learning and start using the language.

I HAD A LOVE STORY WITH MY DREAM GIRL

Sierra went up to her room almost immediately after coming home. She rocked her daughter to sleep. She was just really sad. She wanted to say yes to him. She was not sure she should. She felt that this could not happen. She was shocked that he did not see it that way. Perhaps he was not thinking straight. Off sense, he was usually very stoic but not on this. She was surprised by that. That was not like him.

She found it hard to sleep. She put the baby in her crib. She tried to get to sleep. She could not stop thinking about the pastor. She wished she could say yes. She really did not think she could. She finally drifted off to sleep.

He went home feeling defeated. He never expected it to go like this. He came home and went inside. He imagined how he thought that the night would go. he imagined an amazing night. He imagined walking her to her door. He imagined telling her how he felt. He imagined her crying. She would tell Ashley about the night.

That was not how it happened. he did not fully understand it. He knew age was reluctant because of her past. Why couldn’t she get passed it? He had gotten past it. He had trouble getting to sleep but finally did.

They usually communicated often during the week. He decided to give her space. He figured that perhaps they needed time apart.

She worked and spent time with her daughter. She had decided to keep a professional distance from the pastor. She hoped that they could move back to a pastor, parishioner relationship. She was not sure if that was possible.

She had become friends with a lady that attended a more evangelical Baptist church. ” what church do you go to? ” Lisa asked. “Gospel Baptist church!” Sierra answered. “Oh!” Lisa answered. “It’s a good church. I was saved while attending there” Sierra said.

“They are very strict. ” Lisa said. ” I don’t find them strict but I ding really have anything to compare them to. They are all very nice. ” Sierra told her.” you should come to to.my church. We have really good child care. We have modern music. We do a lot of special functions. You and Naveah would love it. ” Lisa said.

When Lisa first suggested this, she had no intention of leaving g.b.c and going to her church. The g.b.c style of the church was all she knew. She knew nothing of the seeker-sensitive model employed by many evangelical churches. She loved g.b.c. to go somewhere else was unthinkable.

After the coffee date with the pastor, she started to consider going somewhere else. She felt maybe she needed to be separated from the pastor for a time. She was not sure.

“I am thinking of looking into other churches!” She told her sister Ashley. “You got to be kidding. Why?” Ash said. “There are churches that still stand on the word of God that are more user-friendly,” she said. “Siera do you hear self? What is your running form? What is going on? ” Ashley said.

“G.b.c is not the one true church. ” Sierra said. “True but God used this church to bring you to him. Then he used that church to bring me to him. As long as you live in this community why not go here?” She asked. ” your right. ” Sierra said. “You got to get a handle on this. Don’t turn back. Don’t drift away.” She instructed her.

She had not talked to the pastor since Sunday night. She and Ashley rode together. They parked in the driveway. They got out. They walked towards the church. They went inside. Sierra held the baby.

They greeted various people. They went into the sanctuary. She was dreading seeing the pastor. She saw him walk into the sanctuary. He was talking to various people. Maybe he would run out of time and start the service without talking to her.

He did come over to her. The baby smiled at him.he smiled back. “Good evening siera.” She said. “Hello, pastor.” She said. “How are you tonight?” He asked. “I am good. How are you?” Did she ask? “I am good,” he said. “Good i am glad to hear that.” She said. “It is good to see you.” He said.”it is good to see you pastor” she replied.

After that, he went to the front of the church to start the service. She was relieved. She was happy that that was over with. It was hard to still attend the church but she knew that her sister was right. She was supposed to attend this church. She was being taught the word of God. She knew that. she would grin and bear it. she hoped that the awkwardness would subside.

After the service, she hoped to be able to leave right away. Having a young child make the difficult. There is getting her ready to go. Everyone wants to see her. She is the official church baby. Sierra wants to get out of the church and head home as soon as possible. She knew that would not be possible.

The pastor stood at the door greeting people as they left. She considered seeking out through the basement but decided not to. She And Ashley and her daughter came to the pastor. “It’s good to see you.” He said. “It good to see you.” She said. They shocked ha da. He shocks the babies hand.

Finally, they were outside. They went into the car. They were off. They headed home. She was happy about that. She was not quite ready to face him. She hoped that things would go back to normal between them even if it was a new normal.

” how are things between you and sieera,” his sister asked over the phone. “Nonexistent. It is really awkward between us. She is not supportive of a relationship. I don’t know if i should pursue her or not. I don’t know what she wants. I don’t know if she is turning away hoping i will catch her or if she really wants me to back off. ” he told Marissa.

” what do you think she wants?” Marissa asked. “I don’t know. I don’t know much about her before she was saved. She does not discus it and i understand. Old things have passed away. I have a feeling she was boy crazy. I suspect she wanted a guy to fill that void. I suspect that now that she has find joy in Christ ,she does not want anything else. At the same time she feels her sin has disqualified her from being Married. I wish i knew what she really wanted. ” he told her sister.

” she wants you to pursue her. Even if she has convinced herself that she does not. ” she said. “You sure?” He asked. “I see the way she looks at you. She is afraid. She really believes that she can’t or should not. She is convinced it is a sin to mary you. She wants you to convince her it is not. ” she said.

“How do i do that ?” He asked.”talk to her. Realy talk to her. Have a long talk. Take her concerns seriously. Let her know that you want her in your family. Do you believe in your heart of hearts that It is Gods will for you mary her, ?” Marissa asked.

“Without a doubt. ” he said. “Tell her that. Make her understand that. If you don’t you are going to lose her. I don’t think that is what you want.” She is him.

“No its not. I fell in love the first bight i met her. She was unsaved then so it would not have been right. I knew she was the one. Just like dad knew that mom was the one. I waited. I knew.” He told her. “The first time I met her,I could tell. Work with her. Work this thing out. ” she told him. “Ok. ” he said.

“I have a feeling there will be a wedding soon.” She said. “I hope so.” He said.

the pastor ask sierra out for cofee

The pastor was deeply affected by what he heard. He cared for Sierra deeply. He did not want her to feel like that. He took time to pray and reflect. He decided to talk to her.

On that Sunday, he went up to her. “Sierra. ” he said.”hello pastor. “She said. “Sierra, would you like to go out for coffee tonight after church?” He asked.”i would love to. “She answered.” Excellent. ” he said.”sounds good,” she said.

She was surprised that he asked her to coffee. He had been distant for the last few days. The conversation she had with Ashley had been on her mind.

In the afternoon, Sierra put the baby down for a nap. She sat down on the couch.” the pastor asked me to coffee after the service” Sierra said. “That’s great. ” Ashley said. “It is out of the blue.” She said. “You two have gone out for coffee before. ” Ashley commented.”i know that,” she said.

After the service, the pastor shook hands with various church members. after the people had left, the pastor and Sierra heard out. He set up navi’s car seat in his car. They got in. They drove to the coffee shop.

“How was your day?” He asked. “It was good. Service we great today. Had a relaxing afternoon. How was your day?” Did she ask? “It was good. I thought the services went well today. I had a relaxing afternoon. I usually take a short nap then put the finishing touches for the evening service. ” he said.

He parked the car in the lot. He turned off the car. They exited the vehicle. He got the baby. They walked to the coffee shop. It seemed awkward. She noticed they seemed off. There was unspoken tension between them. They went in.

The baby always got attention. She was a big hit wherever she went. At first, Sierra was not used to all the attention but she got used to it. Ahe found it hard to be a single mom. She got a lot of dirty looks. She got the occasional comments from busybodies. She would be friendly. She brushed it off. Today she suspected people thought that they were a family.

He had siera and the baby sit down. He ordered the coffee and donuts. He came over with the orders. He sat them on the table. He distributed the drink. He handed her hers. Then he sat down.

“We need to talk,” he said in a blunt matter of fact tone. “Oh!” She said. She had no idea what he was referring to. “I would like to begin a relationship with you that will one day lead to marriage.” He said.

“Pastor no. I know you like me. I tried to pretend you did not. I know how you feel about me. I love it. You are the kindest sweetest man i know but we can’t. I will drag you down. I will drag down your reputation. I would not be a good friend if i did not say no.” She said.

“Siera, i understand where you’re coming from. I see your point. At first, it will be hard. There will be some who won’t understand. Some won’t agree with our relationship. In five years it will matter less and less. In the time it will be part of your biography. People will look at it as evidence of Gods grace. ” he said.

“It does not seem fair pastor. You played by the rules. You like Daniel purposed in your heart to be morally pure. I did not try. I made no effort. You will always be reminded of that fact. You need to find A wife that is like you. Someone who likes you worked hard at maintaining purity and integrity. I am not that person. ” she said.

“I judge you differently then you judge yourself. You judge yourself by how you were before you were saved. You are not that person. I love who you are. ” he said.

“You say that now. I am still new. i am new. I am exciting. What happens when i become old news? What happens when the new car smell wears off. What happens when i became familiar? When my conversion story is no longer romantic? When the singer part drowns out the saved by grace part? Find someone worthy of you. Find an independent Baptist wife. ” she said.

“I already have,” he told her. ” i am not one for you,” she said. “How do you know?” He asked. “The one for you will not have known a man.navi’s dad was not the first. ” she said. “I am not surprised. It is not a deal breaker,” he said. “It is for me,” she said.

“It’s should not be. That action does not define you. It was before you were saved. I don’t hold it against it.” He said. “You will. It’s easy now. Eventually, it will hit you. ” she said.

“Do you not trust me?” He asked. “Of course i trust you,” she said. “Then trust me. Look i dont make snap decisions. I take an hour organizing my sock drawer. I have thought this through. ” he said. “I am not right for you pastor. I am not your type,” he said. “How do you know? What do you think my type is?” Did he ask? “I dont know. Someone who Grew up in a fundamental Baptist family. Someone conservative. ” she said.

“You are pretty conservative. You dress modestly. You keep to yourself. Hard working. I don’t see any issues. I judge you my who you are today. Your not a clone of me. I don’t want to marry myself. As long as your living by biblical principles, there is room for differences. ” he said.

“I don’t see it working not forever. We try it and it fails will we be able to still be friends? I don’t want to risk that.” She said.

“I can’t change your mind?” He asked. “No. You can’t. I am sorry. I have my daughter to think about. I won’t have her getting attached to you and then you walk away. ” she said.”you think i would walk away?”He asked. “I won’t put you in that position,” she said.

“Ok,” he said. Things got really quiet between them. After a time they got up And left the coffee shop. They walked to the car.he drove her and the baby home. He parked. He got the car seat. He brought the baby inside.

She walked him to his car.” i an sorry this night did not go how you planned it to. ” she said. “Look, Sierra. I overheard your conversation with Ashley. I snuck out so you would not see me. Sierra, you are exactly what i want. I would not change anything about you. There is no one else. There will never be anymore else. ” he said.

“I can’t do this tonight,” she said. “Ok. If you want to talk call me” he said. “Ok.” She said. She went inside. He got in his car and drove away.

“You ok? You look upset?” Ashly asked.”i am ok. ” she said. She picked up the baby and went to her room.

matt and sierra grow closer . siera is still reluctant to date him.

The pastor drove back to Morrison. He called Sierra. “Hi, are you back?” She asked. “I just pulled in. ” he said.”welcome back pastor,” she said.”thanks. It’s good to be back. ” he said. “I bet. Do you want to come over for supper tonight or are you still suffering from car lag?” She asked. “I can come over. I am going to take a nap. I will be fine by then. ” he said. She chuckled.

“Ok. I will see you then. Get some rest.” She said. “I will,” he told her. He took a nap. He unpacked his car. He then took a shower and got ready to see Sierra. He put on a blue flannel shirt and jeans. He got in his car and drove to her apartment.

Sierra shared an apartment with her sister. The pastor had a rule. He would never be alone with a woman who was not a relative. If Ashley was there, he was ok with it.

He parked his car in her driveway. He got out. Sierra and ash came out. Sierra wore a white dress shirt and denim skirt. She was barefoot. She invited him in. “I got something for you. It’s from my sister,” he told her.

He gave it to you. She opened the package. It was a picture frame. It was a picture of the pastor and Navi. She smiled.”tell her to thank you for me. I love it. ” she said. She showed it to her sister. Ashly smiled.

She made a shepherds pie. He loved it she made cheesecake. He helped her clear the table. Then they sat in the living room. He held the baby. She giggled when he made faces at her.

“Pastor, are you and i friends?” Sierra asked. “Of course we are. ” he said.” Can we be friends? You’re the pastor. In a way aren’t you management and me just an hourly worker?” She asked. he chuckled..” It’s not how it is supposed to be. In Christ, all are equal. We are all part of the body of Christ. We all make up the church. Ephesians say he gave some elders for the equipping of the Sants..in the early church, Paul and his team would see people saved..they would gather. The church members were saved and displayed at roughly the same time. It would become evident that there were some who were gifted to lead and were spiritual mature men. They were part of the community. They were not from seminaries. They were one if there own. I don’t subscribe to the clergy-laity divide. To answer your question yes we can be friends.” He said.

“Ok. Just making sure,” she said she had come to expect a long explanation from him. He liked to give explanation.he was expository. He liked oratory. She had gotten used to it. She was careful to ask questions .she knew she would probably get a monologue.

Christmas season gave way to the new year. Winter was in full swing. The pastor checked in on Sierra frequently. He plowed out her driveway. He would not accept money but did accept super.

They became close friends. They seem to become closer and closer. The little one loved the pastor. She smiled when she saw him. He was the closest thing she had to a daddy.

He was not ready to date her but he thought they were heading in that direction. It seemed inevitable. He looked forward to it.

Winter turned to spring. The baby was crawling and becoming a toddler. She was getting bigger. The weather was getting warmer.

The pastor planned on one day asking her out. He had no time table. In his mind, they were predating. He assumed she knew that. They seemed to be moving closer together. They sat together at the valentines banquet at the church. They went out for coffee. They hung out at the playground. He never mentioned dating let alone marriage. She just assumed that they were friends. Food friends but just friends.

One day he came over her house. She was outside with her sister and her daughter. The baby was crawling on the floor. He overheard her conversation.

“Are you and the pastor a couple?” Ashley asked. She found that question absurd.” of course not. ” she said. “He likes you. “She said. ” not like that. He does not see me as a wife. I am hardly a pastor’s wife material. He does not casually date.” she said. “He really likes you. I think that he would marry you in a heartbeat.” She said.

“Maybe. I could never ask that of him. ” Sierra said. “He loves you. Any stranger off the street could see that,” she said. “I could not ask him. He has worked so hard to build a reputation of integrity and good character. I would tarnish that. He would have a wife who did not have the same reputation. He played by the rules. I did not even try. I would not be a good friend if I dated him. He could do so much better than me. He should marry a girl that grew up Baptist. ” she said.

He heard all this. He went to his car and wept. He cried a lot. He could not believe she thought that. He wanted to go and give her the biggest hug ever. He never looked before he leaped. He went home. He cried a little.he could not believe she thought that. He hated that she thought that. How could she think that? He valued her. Why could she not see how much she meant to the church and to him personally?

He called his sister Marissa. “I kinda stepped in it is.” He told her. “Oh, what happened?” She asked. “Sierra and i have spent a lot of Time together. I assumed she knew i was considering something deeper and more permanent. We have been pretty much inseparable since i got back from Christmas vacation. I overheard her saying that she does not feel like she could date me. I thought we were both on this road together. ” he told her.

“You should talk to her. Talk it over. “She advised him. ” i dont rush into things. Do you think its time?” He asked.”do you think that there is a chance that she is not Gods will for you?” Marissa asked. “I have prayed about it. No, i don’t see anything i would consider a deal breaker. I have heavily scrutinized her. I have looked for red flags. ” he said.

“There are times to be cautious. There are also times to rise and build. Is this that time matt?” She asked. “I think I know what i need to do.” He said. “I think you do too. It’ss funny i knew how you feel Bout her the day i met her. I saw the way you responded to her. I think you have been in love with her the moment she came to your church. ” she told him. He knew she was right.

the pastor goes to see his family for family. Sierra snd him keep in touch

It was Christmas time. The days were shorter and were colder. The pastor was getting ready to go on vacation.

“Good morning pastor,” Sierra said. “Morning Serra. Hi, Navi!” He said. He picked her up. She loved how he was with her. “So when are you off?” She asked. “Tomorrow morning. I am going to leave whenever. There is no rush. Mom wants me there by super but I should get there before then. ” he said.

“Oh good. Your mom wants you thereby super?” Sierra asked. He chuckled. “Yes, she does. When i was in college, my mom always insisted when i came home i be home by supper.” He told her. “That’s good i hope you have a good visit,” she told her. “Oh thank you,” he told her.

“You excited about navi’s first Christmas?” He asked. She smiled. “I am very excited. My brothers and older sisters have not met her yet. I only get to see my brother Jason once a year. It will be good. ” she said. “I am glad,” he told her.

After the evening service, Sierra came up to him. She was holding the baby. “So, i got something for you and the baby. It’s a little something. ” he said.”thank you. ” she said.

“No problem. I will be back on Friday,” he told her. “Drive safely.” She told him. “I will. My brother Tom says I Drive like a grandma,” he said. “I was thinking a great grandmother but yes,” she said. He chuckled. “Yes, that’s true. I will be careful,” he promised her. “Oh ok,” she said.

She gave him a card. He thanked her. He picked up navi.” you be good while i am gone ok. I see you when i get back. ” he hugged her. He kissed her cheek. He put her in a car seat. He gave Sierra a hug.

That night he sat down on the couch. he opened the envelope from Sierra. She left a picture of her daughter. She was smiling. He smiled. There was a Christmas card there. There was a note attached to the card. He took out the note.

“Dear Pastor. I want to wish you the merriest of Christmas. I hope you have a restful and relaxing Christmas break. I hope you have a great time with your family. Navi and i will miss you while you are gone. ”

“This Christmas i understand the meaning behind it. I knew about the North of Christ at Christmas but it did not mean anything to me. It means so much more this year. I will be thinking of you while you’re gone. Sierra.”

He cried. He really cared about her. He was not sure of a relationship could work. He had never been close to a female like he was close to her.

The next day he drove to his parent’s house. It was a four-hour drive. When he pulled into his parent’s driveway he texted Sierra telling her that he made it. She was so glad he did.

He had a good time with his family. He was close to his family. He was enjoying spending time with his parents and siblings. It was Christmas day. They had opened parents and had dinner. They played football then were fellowshipping. Some of the younger kids were taking naps.

His phone rang. The pastor checked the caller is. “I should take this!” The pastor said. He got up and pushed the button to accept the call. “Hey, Sierra!” He said. “Hi, pastor!” She said. “How was your Christmas?” He asked. “It was great. Navi was a big hit. She and my brother Hayden are best friends. She is the star of the show. This is the first time our family is together in one place for a few years. I am having a good time” she told him.

“I am so glad. Did you open the one from me?” He asked. “I did. I love it. I am going to send you a pic of her in your school onesie. She loves the bear. ” she told him. “Oh i am so glad,” he said. “Thank you.” She said. “My pleasure,” he said.

“How is your Christmas?” Sierra asked. “It is going great. I am having a great time catching up with the family. We got some family pictures. ” he said. “I am glad to hear that,” she said.

“Well, i don’t keep you any longer. I wanted to wish you a Mary Christmas,” she said. “I am glad you did. I wish you a Merry Christmas. “He said. ” have a great rest of your Tie there. I miss you ” she said “i miss you. Hug navi for me. ” he said. “I will,” she said.

After they hung up, his family gave him a look except for Marissa. “What!” He asked. “Who was that?” His sister Alesha asked. “That was Sierra. She is a single mom. She was saved a short time ago. Her daughter was three days old when she first came. ” i said. “I got to meet her. She is really nice. Her baby is a sweetheart. ” Marissa said.

“She is just someone at the church?” HIs sister Kathy asked? ” everyone in the church is important. ” he said. ” should we start getting ready for a wedding?” His mom asked. “We are just friends. “He said. ” does any of us actually say believe it?” His brother tom asked.

He had thought about it. He has wondered about it. She had said she would never marry. did she mean that? Was she hoping someone would press her to marry him? He was not ready to communicate that just yet. He thought marrying her was a possibility.

Next up the pastor and Sierra become closer. He thinks Marriage is inevitable. Intervention: new direction.

Nakesha was stunned by all that had happened that day. She went home stunned. She kicked off her flip flops. She became a Christian and got engaged. She had a Bible in the house. It was a cheap edition of a King James version. She read a bit in rooms. She prayed a bit after.

She slept well that night. She got up the next morning. She was eating breakfast. After breakfast, her phone rang. “Hello,” she said. “Good morning its mat. I wanted to say hi. ” he said.”thanks for calling. ” she said.

“How are you doing?” He asked. “My back is bothering me. It’s a coming occurrence. It has been bad. Other than that I’m ok. I read my Bible. ” she told him.

“Good. I glad,” he said. “I am having a pretty good morning,” she said. “I am glad to hear that. Are you free tonight? I got someone I would like you to meet?” He said. “I am free tonight,” she replied. ‘Awesome. Can you ready by four?” He asked. “Yes I can,” she said. “Awesome. I will see you then,” he said. “Ok,” she said.

The pastor and his kids went to the mall to find an engagement ring for nakesha. The girls helped him pick out a ring. There was one he liked and the girls like it as well.

She had a few skirts and dresses. She had a pink skirt. It was one of her favorites. She thought was cute. She thought that he would like it too. She put on a gray t-shirt. she put on flip flops. she put her hair in a ponytail. She was ready before he was to arrive.

She sat on the porch. She saw the van head her way. The van parked. She smiled. The van parked. She walked to the van and opened the door. He smiled when he saw her. She got in. “This is for you.” He said. He pulled out a small box. He took out the engagement ring. He placed the ring on her finger. She stared at it. “It’s beautiful thank you,” she told him.

They drove. They arrived at the home of Patrick and Regena Carlson. Matt and Kesha got his out of the van. They were greeted by the Carlson. “This is pat and Regena Carlson. There son rick daughters Lisa Cassie and Carly. This is my furnace nikesha.” He said. “It is good to meet you,” she said.

She was thrilled that he referred to her as his finance. she realized that he meant what he said. He would stay by her side as he promised. They eat super together. The food was great. Regina was a great cook.

After dinner, Regina invited her to her study. “Do Kesha, I understand you’re a new believer?” She asked. “Yes, that is correct.” She said.” Matt mentioned your struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts?” She asked.”yes.” She said.

“I grew up in a Christian home. One side if my family were all pastors, the other were missionaries.i made a profession of faith at a young age. I was a happy bubbly kid. As a teen I got depressed..i would be withdrawn. My family chilled it up to teenage years. I was always sensitive and I was a perfectionist. I feared failure. I seemed to have grown out of it but I hid it. I had ups and downs. When I met pat, there was the euphoria of meeting him. I thought I would be ok now. We got married. He pastored a church. I became pregnant. We were a happy family. Life was good. my second pregnancy had some complication. ” she said.

“It made things worse. I grinned and bore it. I was sad. I did not know why. Nothing worked. Try as I could there was no solving that. It was everything, struggle with sin. Feeling I was not good enough. Everyday struggles.it all added up. I decided I wanted to go and be with the lord. My husband and i and the kids were supposed to go to a family camp at a Christian campground. I told my husband I was not feeling well. They went on without me. I slit my wrist. ” she said.

“He was driving when he got the sense that something was wrong. he drives back home. he told our kids to stay in the car and not leave. He found me and called 911. They were able to prevent me from dying. I was in the hospital for a while. Then I was in a psychiatric center for a while. It took me a long time. I try to help or they’re going through it. I do conferences and retreats. I try to council ladies feeling with depression. ” she said.

“How are you now?” Nakisa asked. “I am good. I still have down days. My husband knows what to look for and he knows what to ask. He presses me. Mathew said that you were raped and stabbed. “She said. ” yes. With everything else, I have to deal with pain. ” she said.

“Did you have depression before the attacks?” She asked.”yes I did. “Kesha answered. “Are you on medication for pain?” She asked..”i am but they are concerned about opioid addiction. I am too. I have addiction history in the family. ” she said.

“Pain can affect depression. You will want to watch that. Surround yourself with God’s people. Stay in the word. I will help you anyway i can. I consider my ministry helping ladies through this. Call me anytime. Rely on Mathew.pat and i have known him since he was a boy. He interned at our church. He is like a son to us. You can trust him. ‘” she said.

After a while, they came out.they all fellowship together. They got in the car. “I really like Regina. ” she told Matt. “I am glad. I think the world of that whole family. “He said. ” thank you for tonight.” She said.

He dropped her off at her apartment. She gave him a great big hug. He made sure she made it inside. He drove home.

a pastor prevents a suicide attempt.

It was a tradition that pastor matt take his girl out for ice cream once a month. Matt was a single dad of three daughters. His daughters were six, four and two. Matt was the pastor of an independent fundamental Baptist church and a widower.

Matt loaded the girls into the van. He headed to the ice cream store. He saw something out of the ordinary. A young lady wore a white t-shirt and jeans and was barefoot. He parked. He got out.

“Are you ok?” He asked. “Please go away!” She said.”you know i can’t do that if you’re going to do what i think you’re going to do! ” he said. “Please leave me alone!” she said. She was getting ready to jump off the bridge.

“Look right now life seems unlivable but things change. Perspectives change. How you feel now won’t be how you feel later.” He said. “I can’t do it. I don’t want this anymore.” She said. “Taking your own life is not the answer. You just pass on the pain to your loved ones,” he said

“I don’t really have loved ones. My parents are dead. I have a sister on the west coast but we are not close. I have a half brother i met once. No real friends. Acquaintances, i guess. I have no real connections. No one would miss me.” she said.

” you would be surprised. I am not sure that’s true,” he said. “Go away. ” she said.”you know i can’t do that. Look my daughters and i are going to get some ice cream. Why don’t you come with us and we can talk about it?” he asked?

“I have made my decision. I going to die today. ” she said.”if you died, do you know where you would go?” He asked. “I don’t know. I am not a bad person. Hopefully when the man upstairs weighs my good and bad, the good will outweigh the bad and he will let me into heaven. ” she said.

“That’s not how it works. The Bible says that all our works are as filthy rags. Much of the time we don’t choose between right or wrong but chose between right and good enough. Often we chose good enough. according to the bible is a sin. It is missing the mark. It is falling short of Gods standard. We all stand guilty before God. ” he said.

“Oh great. Why did there have to be a minister nearby?” She asked?”i prefer pastor.” He said.”i am sure you do.” She said. “Look let’s go talk. I have kids in the car,” he said. “They should not be heard. They should not see it. Just go. You’re not responsible for me!. if something happens, my blood will not be on your hands. ” she said.”it does not work that way. you know i will always regret it. I will always wonder what if. It too late i am involved. “He said.

“I dont want to go on. Whenever i end up, it will be better than this. I can’t go on. ” she said.”what is the source of all this? What is causing you to want to take your own life? ” he asked. “I was raped and stabbed. I am in constant pain. I can barely walk. I have p.d.s.t anxiety depression. I can’t sleep. I can’t go on. ” she said.

“Let’s go talk. I will help you anyway i can. We can work on this. I won’t leave your side. ” he said. “You say that now. You dont care about me. You only care about your conscience. You will leave and forget about me. You talk a good game reverend but you have no skin in the game. “She said.

“If you agree not to jump, i will mary you. I will have skin in the game. ” he told her.” you barely know me. I a bit of a nut job. ” she said. “I won’t leave your side.” He said. He extended his hand. She took it. “Ok. Don’t let me down!” She said. “I won’t,” he promised her.

She picked up her flip flops and put them on. They walked hand In hand to the van. “Girls this is..” He said. He realized that he did not know her name. “I am nakesha.” She said. “This is miss nakesha. She is going to join us for ice cream,” he said.

He drove the van to the ice cream store. He parked the van. The pastor and nakesha got out of the van. She opened the van. “What your name honey?” Nakesha asked.”is Nina I’m two,” she said. “Hi, Nina. It’s good to meet you. “Nakesha said. She picked her up. She held her.

He got Cayce and Macey out of the van. They held hands and formed a chain. They sat down. He took her order. He went and ordered. She got the girls seated. ” what are your names?” Nakesha asked. “I’m Macey.” The middle and said.”it Cayce” she said. “How old are you two?” Kesha asked.”i am 6 and mace is four.” The oldest said.

While the pastor waited for his order, he watched her interacting with his kids. She was so gentle with them. They seem to like her. He got his order. He brought the ice cream back. He gave the ice cream to nakesha. She thanked him.

“You believe i am a sinner?” She asked.”yes i do. Because i know all have sinned. I sin. I wish i did not sin but i do. ” he said. “You believe Christianity is the only way to God?” She asked.”i believe Jesus is the only way to the father. He said so. ” he said. “I assume you’re a widower?” She asked. “Yes she died shortly after Nina was born,” he admitted. “You don’t blame God for it?” She asked.” she did what she was supposed to do. Her time on earth was done. Would i have liked to have more time with her? Yes, i would. I am at peace with it. ” he said.

“You were never mad at him?” He asked.”not mad. I was upset. It was u expected. I did not get it. I never counted his goodness. I asked him why multiple times. Earth is not it. My citizenship is in heaven. I believe that. ” he said.

“Jesus is cool. I don’t know about him being exclusive,” she said. “He said he we the only way to the father. Why not take him at his word. Trust him.those justified live form one act of faith to another. ” he said.

“I see what you’re saying. How can you be sure? ” she asked. “I know what the Bible says is true. I know what the Bible says is true about me. I know God the Father loves me. I know his way is best. I have learned to trust him. “He told him.

“I can see that I am a sinner. Why do I have to do it Gods way? Why only one way?” She asked.”if your drowning and someone shows you a lifeline, do you complete that he is being exclusive. There is no other lifeline. No one else is offering a lifeline that will work. ” he said.

She thought about it. She felt she might not get another chance. There was a sense of urgency. “How can I be saved?” He took her through the gospel. She made a profession of faith that night.

After a time, they returned to the van.he drove her home. “Look. I am going to give you my number I am going to give you. my sister’s number. I promised that I would never your side. You need to do your part. You have a suicidal thought of Any kind you call me. You can’t get a hold of me you call my sister. You don’t stop until you get a hold of someone. Promise me!” He said.

“I promise,” she said. He hugged her. She hugged the girls. Both there lives had changed.

Church visitor part 7

siera grows in her faith. the pastor starts to think that they could have a future together .

Sierra was growing in her faith. Sierra became more and more active in the church. The church became more a part of her life and more a part of her.

Her sister Ashley had attended the church. She came every time the church was in session. She and she talked extensively about the lord. She was still not saved. She had been convinced but not converted.

Try as she might, she could not get past certain things. Sierra was patient. Sierra just kept talking to her. Ashley kept asking questions and kept attending.

It was in November shortly before Thanksgiving that Ashley made a profession of faith. After a Wednesday night service, Ashley told Sierra that she needed to get saved. She took. her through the gospel. She made a profession that night.

The pastor was thrilled when he learned that Ashley had made a profession of faith. He held discipleship classes for Ashley. He let sierra do much of the disciplining. She did much of the talking. He chimed in at times. He was impressed with Sierra. Sierra had taken this to heart. She was growing in her faith.

He feared that she had been an atheist in the foxhole. He feared that she might have just glommed on to something. Things were changing. Her faith was taking hold. He was beginning to think that this was a genuine conversion. He believed that she was really saved. He was thrilled by that.

He was thrilled to see her growing. She was becoming a leader in the church among women. God had his hand on her. That was clear.

He let her do most of the talking. Since she was saved she was a lot quieter. He wondered just how much she absorbed all of his sermons Judging what she was sharing during the discipleship course with ash, it turned out a lot. He was very impressed. She had taken this to heart.

Ashley grew in her faith. In many ways, Ashley was the pastors and Anne’s spiritual granddaughter.

She was growing. He feared that she might fall away but she had not. She was growing.he was thankful for that.

Thanksgiving was fast approaching. They had dinner just before the week of Thanksgiving. The pastor sat by Sierra and Navi. ” so the whole time I have known you, you have been single at least I think you have been?” She observed.

He smiled. ” yes I am single.” He said.”why are you single? You’re handsome .your mature. I am surprised that you are single she told him. “I was engaged once. We dated in college. She wanted to be a missionary and I wanted to pastor a church in America. We thought we could convince the other person. We were both determined to convince the other to join there point of view. Of course, that would do not happen. We tried to persuade the other to adopt our position. We both believed we were right. We decided to break it off. She is married with kids. They are serving overseas. It was an amicable breakup. I am happy for them. ” I said.

“You have not dated since then?” She asked. “No. I have not really been looking for. I have not been not looking. I am content. I still want to be married. ” he said.

“You will make a great husband and a great father. Navi adores you.” She said.”i think the world of her. “He told her. ” I can tell. You will. find someone. I know it. ” she said.

He was surprised by what she said. He thought that she was flirting with him. He did not mind. She acted like he would end up with someone else. He was surprised by that. He started to think that they were on a journey that ends up with there being married. She seemed to poopoo that.

“You will be a great wife. “He told her.” Oh, I am not going to be married.” she said. “Your not? ” he asked. “Come on, I am a single mom. Everyone knows I was unfaithful. U can’t do that to anyone. I can’t ask him to be faithful to someone who has not. I would want to marry someone who is more spiritual then I am. Someone who was saved a long time ago. It would be unfair to ask him to accept me as I am. I blew my chance. ” she said.

“Look what was in the past. It’s forgiven. It’s gone. the right man won’t care. He will love you no matter what. He will see past all that. ” he told her. “I can’t ask him to do that,” she said. “You won’t have to,” he said.

The conversation moved to something else. It got him thinking. Could she be the one. Could he marry her? He was beginning to think that he could marry her.

The church visitor

It was an ordinary night. It was an evening service at gospel baptist church. Nothing seemed different. It would be different.

It was a independent fundimental Baptist church. There was usualy fithty people in the morning and thirty at night. The pastor preached from the king james verson. They dressed up.  They sang hymns and contemporary music. They were a few families and a few. Younger people but mostly younger people.

The attendants were the usual. Some were members.  Some were attenders.  The pastor was in his late twenties.  The organist was playing music to set the mood.

The pastor called the service to order.he wore a suit and tie. He made the opening statements.  He made opening announcement.  As he was speaking, the door opened. A young lady entered. She wore a t shirt, jeens and flip flops. Her hair was in a ponytail.  She had a car seat with a newborn baby with her. She tried to not make a scene. She made it to a seat.

Three days earlier, she had given birth. Her parents were not particularly religious.  As a kid a church buss picked her up for Sunday school. She went for a few years but stopped going.

She had never realy considered going back. She did not not beleve but it was not a priority. Then she got pregnant.  The farther had no interest in her or her child. She decided to have the child. Three days earlier, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Sunday morning she was stil tired.

She decided to go to church that night. Alot of churches only had morning services. She saw cars parked and the lights were on. She assumed that they had services. She parked. She walked inside. She hoped she had not missed too much. She only missed the opening remarks.

She sat down. She picked up her daughter.  A lady who was a few years older then her came over to her. “Hi welcome to our church.  ” she said. She thanked her.

He opened in prayer. Then the worship team came up. They sang four songs. Two were old hyims and two were song heard on christian music stations. The songs were nothing but the blood, church one foundation,  one things remains and oh how he loves.

She was suprised that the pastor was in his late twenties.  He did not wear a wedding ring. He seemed older. They did not take an offering but had an offering box in the back of the church.

He preached on the atonement of Christ.  He started in genises three. He explained the fall of men and the promise deliverer  and the sacrifice pictured by the lamb. He discused the crossing of the red sea and how it relates to salvation. He explained how Christ took our punishment at the cross. He tried to make it clear but simple. This was his planed message.  He had felt an urgency in preaching it tonight but had no idea why until now. He closed the setvice with the song “in christ alone”

“This song says that the wrath of God is satisfied. God is angery at us because of our sin. We have all sin and come short of his glory . when jesus died on the cross, our sin’s penalty was paid for.  His wrath is satisfied.  ” he said. After they sang it, he prayed and dismissed the service.

The lady went over to her. “Hi i am anne. ” the lady said. “I am seara. This is navi. ” she said. “She is beautiful. ” anne said.

The pastor came in. “Hi welcome to gospel Baptist church. I am pastor Reynolds.  “He said. “I am seara.  This is navi. ” she said. He asked if he could hold her.  She said yes..he picked her up. “Helo navi. How old is she? “He asked. “Three days old. ” she said. “She is healthy?” he asked. “Yes. She was seven lbs. Everything was good. ” she said.

“How are you?” he asked. “I am doing good.  I am tired.  Everything went good. “She said.”i am glad to hear that. Do you have a home church?” he asked.

“No i dont.  I have not gone to church in a long time. I feel like i want to go. I started driving and saw you were having services.  ” she said. “I am glad your hear.  We have Sunday school at nine thirty, morning service at 10:45.evening service at six and Wednesday night at six thirty.  We are a family. We would love if you come. We do have a nursery.  That lady jane heads it up.  If you want to keep her up hear no problem. That room is designed as a nursing room. It has a one way miror and speaker. “He said.

“Oh ok. ” she said. “Do you need anything,  we have some extra diapers and some can goods and some baby cloths. ” he said. “No i am fine thank you. I am not hear for a hand out” she said. “Ok. If you need anything let me know ” he said. “Thank you.  I appreciate that. ” she answered.

He held her daughter gently. She seemed content in his arm. A lady in the church took a picture of him and the baby. She had a feeling that this moment would be important to the pastor.  She had a feeling that this litle girl would be important to him.

“Can i have you fill out a visitor card?”he asked. “Of course.” she said. Anne handed her the card and a pen.”you can keep the pen. ” he said. She filled it out.

“Do you have a bible? “He asked.  “No i don’t. “She said.  “I have some .we keep some on hand. Would you like one? “He asked. “I would.  thank you.”she said. “On the front page,we have the church’s contact information.  We have a website and i put my cell and the church’s number. Feel free to call if you have any question “he said. “Of course. “She said.

She completed the form and gave it to anne. Anne gave her a bible.  She thanked her and took it.

“I should be going. I am going to feed her and put her to sleep. “She said.”ok.navi i am going to have to give you back to your momy. It was good to meet you. “He said.

He gave her back to her mom. Siera took her back. “I am glad you came. “The pastor said. “Thank you.  “She said.

She went to her house. She fed her daughter and put her to bed. She took out her bible she read some of the verses the pastor referenced. She read genises three. She read romans three four and five.

That night she thought about what the pastor had said. The thoughts swam though her hand. The idea that all had sin and fell short of God’s standered made sence to her. The idea that jesus paid the penalty for her sin also made sense. She continued to think on it.

The pastor was glad she came. The pastor hopped that she would come back.  He hoped that she would be saved. He would pray for her and navi. He felt a certain responsibility for them. He saw the people in the church as a family.  He saw siera and her daughter as part of the church. And a part of the family.

Wendsday night was the midweek service. The pastor saw Siera’s call pull in. He went over to her. “Hi Siera. “He told her.  “Helo pastor. “She said. “I can get navi if you want!” he said.”yes . Thank you. ” she said. He got the car seat. “Hi navi. ” he said.

They went inside.  The church people greated her. Anne sat next to her. “It is good to see you. ” anne said. “Thank you.” she agreed.

He was doing a series on wendsday on key doctrines. This week was the diety of Christ.  He tried to explane that Jesus is God. He discussed the incarnation. He tried to make it simple. He did not want to target siera in his messages.  This was his planed mesege and she was hear.

She did not prayer during the prayer time. She listened as ann and those in the smal group of ladies prayed.

After the servive, the pastor held navi.”hi miss navi.” he said. Her family tried to get to her to go to one of the mega churches or one of the community churches. Bsptist could have a bad reputation. They were known for being old fashioned or strict.  She liked the church.  She was warned that baptist were judgemental.  If they judged her, she saw no evidence of that.

“So do you get much sleep?” he Asked. “She wakes up at two and four. She usualy feeds back to sleep.  It has not been too bad. “She said. “Thats good. ” he said.

She figured he would be super strict. He looked serious. He seemed stioc. He did not come off as bubbly.  He was kind. He was soft spoken but not weak. He disarmed her. She respected him and she liked him. She trusted him.

The sigles night

a valentines day banquet produces an unexpected result.

Gospel baptist church hosted a signle and widows night. It was near valentines. They held one for couples later on but also near valentines.  The church had a good number of couples and widows and signles. There was ebenough to have events for couples and another for widows- singles.
The singles event was orginized by mrs Lyons.  Michele lyions was a wife and mom. She graduated from an independent fundamental Baptist college where she met her husbend. She was a stay at home mom. She had several unoficial ministeries. The singles and widows event had been her brain child.  She looked froward to it every year. She realy got into it. She got everyone else excited about it as well.

“Pastor rolins. ” mrs. Lyions said. The pastor tried to avoid her as the day of the event dawned. “Helo Mrs lyions! “The pastor said. “Are you coming to the single widows diner this year?”she asked.  “Oh i dont know.  “He answered.

“My neice can babysit the girls. You have to come. You need to take a break. Let your hair down. Relax a bit.” mrs. Lyions told him.

“I know but i don’t know. “He told her.”you will enjoy it. It will be a lot of fun.there will be a lot of good food. Please come!” she admonished him.

“Alright i will come!” he said. “You wont regret it pastor”she said. He decided that he would stay a short time. He would not stay long or at least that was the plan. Pastor mathew rolins had been pastor of gospel baptist for five years.he was the son of a pastor. His family on both side included pastors, missionaries, evengelist and lay workers. Matthew attended fundamental Baptist univetsity. There he met his life Lisa.  Lisa and him had three daughters, lacy, macy and lexie. Shortly after lexie was born, lisa was kiled in acar accident.  He found himself a widow and a signle dad.

He took time off and slowly eased back into the church.  He had a close knit relationship with his deacons who helped him with that process. He had the suport of nearby Baptist pastors who helped him however they could.

He slowly bounced back. By now, he was content.  He was not quite back to himself but he was in a kind of new normal. The sadness made him a different person but in some ways a stronger leader. His ministry has grown from it. It was not easy or comfortible but with God’s help, he got through it.

Mrs. Lyions made her rounds. She tried to make sure that the singles would come. She hoped to have one hundred percent of singles and widow’s to attend. She would approach the widows and signles personally and make sure they commit to attending the event.

She came to Chrisy Eliot. Chrisy was 19 years old. She was the oldest of four kids. She had a 14 year old brother a ten year old sister and a five mounth old sister.  She was home schooled.  She was taking college courses though a bible college that operated out of a baptist church.  She was very smart. She was mature.

“Chrisy!” mrs lyions said. “Helo mrs Lyons! ” she said. “Chrisy! I hope your coming to the sigles diner.” she said. Chrisy was reluctant to go. She was shy and reserve. She was signle. She wanted to be maried. Right now she was focused on her education.

“Yes i probably will.”she said. “It is going to be a lot of fun. It is not a paring off event i assure you. ” she said. Chrisy chuckled. “Ok” she said.

While the event was for singles and widows, and it was held near valentines, the perpose was not for couples to develop although that has happened.  The stigma of it being for the purposes of pairing off discouraged some from attending. Mrs Lyons tried to prevent that from occurring.  She tried to downplay that part.

On the day of the diner,  mrs lyions and her team got to work seting things up. They set up table decorations and decoration on the wall. The way things work was that maried couples set up and put on the diner for the singles.  Then for the maried couple diner, the single will set up and put on the event. The seting up went very well. Mrs lyions was pleased with how it turned out.

Pastor rolins was nervous. He had not attended one of these. Mrs rolins tried to get him to come but he had declined. He wanted to decline this year but decided not to. He was planing on putting in a presence then leaving.

Chrisy could have gone the year before but did not. She was not sure why she was coming this year. She decided why not. She wanted to come. She was nervous about it but wanted to do something different.  Most of her days involved clases or her job so this was a nice change.

She wore a green blouse and a denim skirt and mary jane style shoes. She came in.

As soon as the baby sister arived he headed to the church. He wore a blue butoned down shirt and jeens. He took a deep breath before going inside. He figured that it would be fine. It was one night.

He and his wife attended the event for maried coyples. They helped put on the single one. It brought back memories but he tried to look passed it. He tried to stay calm. His social anxiety was kicking in.

There were multiple sigles who were members or faithful attenders. There were some singles from other independent fundamental Baptist churches. A lady from a like minded church came over to him. “Helo. Pastor. ” the lady said. “Helo, its beth right “he remarked.  “Yes”  she said.

It was clear that she was interested in him. He found her to be a bit too eager.  If he did get into a relationship, he wanted it to hapen naturally.  He did not want it to be forced.

He talked to her for a bit. Then the event was about to start. He walked to a safe distance from beth.  Mrs lyions got everyone’s attention. She made announcement.  She welcomed everyone and explained the procedures.  She Asked the pastor to pray for the food. He did so.

After the prayer, everyone got in line.there were two lines. The food was a buffet style. There was lasagna and chilie and other foods.  Chrisy had goten her food before the pastor did.

The pastor got his food and looked for a place to sit. He saw Chrisy.  He decided that sitting next to chrisy was a safe option. She was boy crazy.  He figured that sense she was young, she was not a candidate to be his wife. He decided to sit next to her.

“Helo chrisy. ” he said. She smiled.”Helo pastor. How are you tonight? “She asked. “I am good. How are you?” he asked. “I am doing good. This is the first time i went to this.  I was invited last year but decided not to. I was unsure about this year. I decided to come after all. “She remarked.

“This is my first year. I went to the one for maried couples when lisa was alive. I could not bring myself to go to the signle one the last couple of years.mrs lyions incist it is not a place for dating. It does involve food and i do like to eat. ” he said. “The food is realy good.  Our church is blesed with plenty of good cooks. ” she said. “Very true. Why were you reluctant to come?” he asked. “Well, i am 19. I was 18 last year. I am one of the youngest adults in the church.  I am not really looking to date. Not right now. Someday. If it is not a dating event then i am open to it. It is nixe to have a day to do something different.  “She said.

“I am not ready to date again.  When lisa died, i was not even thinking about thinking about dating let alone remary. Right now,  i am open to it but i am not looking for someone right now. “He admitted.

Other people sat Down at the same table. “How are you doing pastor?  “She asked.”thank you so much for asking. I am in a good place. I am stil not back to the place i was before but i am content. I have found joy in the lord again.  “He said.

“Well i noticed a change in your preaching.  I have noticed you seem to have a zest for life again. It all began around the time you preached though romans. ” she said.

“I dont feel like an excited joy but i know exactly what you meen. I was numb for a realy long time. I was in shock.  It was slightly before i started preaching though Romans that i felt that zest for life again.  ” he said.

“It could not have been easy. Being alone and being a single parent. ” she commented. “No it was not. I was mourning but i wanted to be there for the girls. ” he said. “You handled things realy well. “A lady chimed in.”the church has been great. “He said.

“We are glad you and your kids are hear. We are glad that you did not quit. “Chrisy said. “I wanted to run away. I did draft a resignation leter but i felt the lord wanted me hear.  The deacons were amazing including your dad. I was able to ease back in. The whole church has been a blessing. ” he said. A man said that he had been a blessing to them.

“I am glad you stayed. You are a great fit for our church. “She said.”i like being hear. I dont want to be any where else. I am committed to being hear as long as the lord and the members permit me to be hear. It took me a while to get to that point. “He said.

“So do you think you will remary some day?” she asked. “I am open to it.i dont know.  I would have to be convinced that it is the lord’s will. I would want her to be comfortible with my kids and vice versa. I would want her to be wiling to be a stay at home mom.i know i would be asking a lot. That would be nonnegotiable. It will be hard for them to acept. We would both have to be fully persuaded of this. “He said.

“Do you have criteria for who you would mary?” she asked. “She would have to like kids and acept us as a package deal. I want her to be king james prefered. Believe in separation. Dreses or skirts preferable. Contemporary music is fine but i would want her to be someone who believes in Baptist separation.  So do you want to be married? “He asked.

“I do. I am not realy actively looking. I do want that. My parents have a loving relationship.  Both sets of grandparents have been maried for a long time and have left a positive mark on myself and my siblings. I would love what they had.  ” she admitted.

“What are you looking for in a husband? ” he asked. “I want a godly spritfiled man. I want a protector comforter. I want someone with a bit of a sense of humor.  I would like to mary someone that is at a higher spritel level then me. Mayby someone who is a bit older. Someone in some kind of ministry like an asistent pastor or someone who is on the staff of a Christian camp or has been a sumer missionary.  I want an independent baptist.  I am ok with someone who listens to ccm. ” she said.

“I see. It seems you have thought this over. Those are good thoughts.  ” he said. “So how will you know? ” she asked. “I would have to be so sure. It would have to be so evident. I would have to have it confirmed though the bible and though prayer. We would both have to be convinced together. “He said. “That makes sense.  “She said.

“Would you want to be totally sure?” he asked. “Yes i would.  It is a huge decision.  It is one that effects a person’s whole life. This is especially true for a wife.  Perhaps in some ways more so. ” she said.

“I can understand that.  I agree.  I respect that. You are an impresive young lady. You have realy grown both in maturity and sprituely. The holy sprit has his hand on you.  I know he had begun a good work in you and will complete it in the day of christ. ” he said.

“Thank you. That meens a lot. ” she said. “You are an important part of this church.  “He said.”like i said i am glad that you are the pastor hear. “She said.

After a while, the diner came to a close. The pastor walked her to her car. “It was good talking to you. Sory you had to hang out with the old guy.”he said. “I did not mind. It was good talking to you.  “She said. The two dispersed.

A lot of people saw the two talking. A lot of people began to think that they could be a potential couple.  Talk of a wedding already was buzzing.

Matthew came home.  It was not until the next day it hit him. On sunday, he was having his morning devotional time. He was praying. It hit him like a ton of bricks. He prayed for Chrisy.  He asked the lord if he was supposed to mary her. He felt a peace. He wanted to explore it further.

She went home. Her family teased her. She smiled the whole night. “How did it go?” her dad asked. “Really good” she answered. She did not want to say too much. It was a small church. She knew word would get out.

“It was a good night?” her dad asked.”yes it was. ” she said. “Did you talk to anyone? ” her mom asked. “I just talked to the pastor mostly.  We were both trying avoiding potential sutors. We both are not ready to get together with anyone romanticaly. ” she said.

“Wait! You hung out with the pastor?”her brother asked. “Yes. We both just wanted to enjoy the meal no so much the romantic part. ” she said.

That night, she engaged in her devotional time. She went to bed. She wondered if mayby they had a future together.  She was not sure. She thought that it was a strong posibility. Next up

Chrisy and mathew dont know what to do next. They consider there next steps.

The Journey Begins

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
